Sweep for Hidden Cameras
Most common places hidden cameras are found
Spy-cam detection is just one element of the business counter-espionage debugging sweep; the sweep for hidden cameras is normally undertaken at the onset of the local technical inspection.
Few professional technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) practitioners would welcome being filmed whilst un-packing their bug-sweeping equipment. That is why the sweep for hidden cameras is undertaken by all team members using dedicated video camera lens detectors as well as specialist video countermeasures receivers operating in the 900Mhz, 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz frequency bands.
One useful search principle is that a camera needs a line of sight to its subject, so the search focuses on any point that overlooks a desk, screen or seating position; that said, pinhole, infra-red and behind-the-mesh lenses can observe a room while remaining extremely difficult to spot by eye, which is why instrument-based detection matters. A poorly placed concealed camera will not yield great intelligence. Concealed cameras are rarely planted within general office areas; in one composite drawn from casework, a concealed camera was found in a chief executive’s office, hidden in a clock radio overlooking the desktop screen.
In another composite, a very well concealed camera was found in a boardroom during a sweep. The client had instructed the team to document and remove any confirmed or suspicious eavesdropping devices, which was done. It later emerged that this was an internal installation authorised by the organisation’s own leadership some time earlier, unknown to a recently appointed head of security. Internal monitoring of this kind is lawful only in some circumstances and varies by jurisdiction; covert monitoring of staff or visitors raises privacy-law issues, and organisations should take legal advice before deploying or retaining such devices. These accounts are composites; no client is identifiable from them.
Unfortunately, still the most common location where we identify concealed camera installations is small and medium sized conference rooms as well as hotel rooms.
