Bug sweep detection services are sometimes offered as a sideline by firms whose main work lies elsewhere, such as management consultancies, private investigators, background checkers and due diligence firms. Technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) is a specialist discipline in its own right, requiring dedicated training, professional lab grade equipment and adequate time on site to detect, defeat and nullify electronic bugs, concealed cameras or other eavesdropping devices. Before you retain anyone, ask any sweep provider about their equipment, their training and how long they will spend on site; a thorough inspection cannot be done with a hand-held detector alone. TSCM debugging sweeps are neither cheap nor quick to do properly, and, equally, a high fee is not by itself a guarantee of value.

Your TSCM team should be equipped with a spectrum analyser that will cover the frequency range 10Mhz – >12Ghz, for radio frequency analysis. A telephone and cable analyser, for cable and wire analysis, a non-linear junction detector to identify electronic components in walls, ceiling, and furniture, a thermal imager for thermal emissions analysis, and suitable equipment to evaluate the GSM 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless networks as well as a selection of craft tools. Reporting – A detailed report of findings should be presented within a few days after completion of the onsite audit.
