How to prepare your office

There is a misconception that bugging devices are just a concern of technology, pharmaceutical, or other conglomerates. This is far from the truth – all companies are at risk, especially if you have an advantage or access to information; your intellectual property is highly valued by your competitors and upstarts and may save them a fortune in R&D expenses as well as time.

There is no professional technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) practitioner who would welcome being filmed while unpacking their bug-sweeping equipment. That’s probably why the sweep for hidden cameras is undertaken by all team members using dedicated video camera lens detectors as well as specialist video countermeasures receivers operating in the 900Mhz, 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz frequency bands.

One useful search principle is that a camera needs a line of sight to its subject, so the search focuses on any point that overlooks a desk, screen or seating position, though pinhole and infra-red lenses can be extremely difficult to spot by eye. A poorly placed concealed camera will not yield great intelligence. We have found that concealed cameras are rarely planted within office areas. In one anonymised engagement a concealed camera was located in an executive office overlooking the CEO’s desktop computer screen; details are altered so no client is identifiable.

Unfortunately, still the most common location where we identify concealed camera installations, is small and medium sized conference rooms. Outside of the office, in locations where external meetings are held such as hotels used for remote board meetings and off site AGM’s, these are uncontrolled spaces; house AV and CCTV may be present, so treat them accordingly and assume the room is not private until it has been checked. Should knowledge of your meetings be known to a competitor then there is always the possibility that they may hire the venue just prior to you and have installed their own audio or GSM bugging devices along with a camera to transmit or record the presentation screen or video conference monitors.
