Offices and homes are clearly obvious targets for covert eavesdropping devices, but you may also need to consider surveillance detection in any vehicles you use. Tracking devices or audio bugging devices in cars are not uncommon.

A GPS tracking device providing turn-by-turn location alone provides a wealth of information to your adversary, it may highlight movement patterns that can be exploited, regular routes travelled and timings of same. For individuals who already have a personal-security profile, this is a further reason to keep vehicle-related surveillance risk under review.

Surveillance detection should also be considered for external meetings on super yachts and private jets. However, if these are not owned by corporate or the individual this can be more difficult to secure via a technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) audit without the owner’s consent, real-time in-place monitoring is normally not a viable option on planes. We would say the same for offsite meetings and AGM’s at hotels and business centres, if the meeting will contain highly sensitive information you will need to bring in a sweep team prior to undertake a full business counter-espionage sweep; additionally, if meetings run over more than a single day the option to undertake real-time, in-place countermeasures monitoring whilst the meetings are in progress and a follow-up local technical inspection of key locations prior to meetings on subsequent days.
