Surveillance Equipment Detection
What happens next? You called Risk3 and we completed our surveillance equipment detection bug sweep and we identified two illicit devices, a concealed camera in a meeting room and an electronic bug operating on the GSM mobile phone network in your office.
We have witnessed mixed emotions from clients at the end of a debugging sweep once they realise that surveillance devices have been identified; sometimes it’s elation and relief that they were right, there sixth sense or gut feeling was correct. Other times its fear and anger and sometimes tears the realisation that every word was overheard, recorded or if a concealed camera or spycam was found; every move they made was watched. So, what happens next?
Once surveillance equipment detection has identified that listening devices have been surreptitiously installed there are three basic options to consider for the bugging devices and a decision is to be made about reporting the illegal surveillance depending on your geographic location and the law of the land; normally a lawyer is called so the right decision is made. Your options for the actual eavesdropping devices are thus.
1. All electronic devices are removed, we advocate that this is done forensically, the removal documented, the listening devices deactivated to stop further transmission we have evidence bags with us to secure such items.
2. Leave the devices in situ but muffle or obscure their operation. Maybe we remove the hidden camera but leave the GSM eavesdropping device fully operational, setup counter surveillance on the hidden camera location to see if an attempted repair or reinstallation is attempted, allowing the perpetrator to be caught red handed.
3. With bugging devices left in place disinformation can be seeded to the surveillance team. In our experience, this only works if it is well scripted, this can sometimes flush out your adversary. We will fully brief you on your options at the time so that an informed decision can be made.
