Internet Investigations

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) and social media investigation

Internet investigations draw on information that is already public. People, and the organisations they run, leave a large open-source footprint across social media, business and property registries, court and regulatory filings, corporate records, news archives and the open web. Read carefully and lawfully, that footprint answers real questions: the reputational risk attached to a counterparty, the background of a prospective senior hire, the standing behind a party to a transaction.

Risk3 conducts these investigations from openly available sources only. We do not hack, intercept, impersonate, or obtain data by deception, and we do not access anything a subject has kept private. What we do is find, corroborate and make sense of what is already on the record — and, importantly, tell you when the record does not support a conclusion.

Our approach to Internet investigations

Every engagement begins with your objective and the material you can lawfully share — often no more than a name, a company, an email address or a website. From there we build a structured search plan across the relevant open sources, corroborate each finding against a second independent source wherever possible, and set aside anything that cannot be verified.

We work non-attributably, using standard operational-security practice so that routine research does not tip off the subject or expose the client — not to conceal wrongdoing, but because discreet, professional research is part of doing this properly. All work is lawful, proportionate to the question asked, and conducted in line with applicable privacy law; where a matter needs more than open sources can provide, we say so rather than cross a line.

What you receive

A clear written report with an executive summary, the findings set out with their sources, and a candid view of confidence and gaps. Where the picture is complex we present it visually. Work is documented to a standard suitable, if required, for use in legal proceedings — the court decides admissibility and weight.

Internet investigations sit alongside our digital investigations practice: where a question spans both the open record and a device, the two run under one engagement.

The initial consultation is without charge. We assess each matter first and take on only those where we can add value or obtain the information sought.
